George Stubbs

Stubbs, labeled 'Mr Stubbs the Horse Painter,' was undervalued for far too long. Now he is recognized as the equal of his contemporaries, Gainsborough and Reynolds. He is the most original and searching of all animal painters, whether his subject is a brood-mare and foal, a monkey or a poodle. He is also a portraitist, as much a master of the art of class-distinction in eighteenth-century England as he is of the anatomy of the horse.
