The US 'underground' of the late sixties and early seventies provided a wry alternative to the super-hero tradition, using a deliberately sleazy black-and-white style as a vehicle for a series of ferocious attacks on a society with whose forms of conduct, manners and values the authors were totally at odds. In common with many other pop forms of the time, the underground 'comix' tradition was disseminated through channels other than the established publishing houses, often in conjunction with the hippy movement, in the form of fanzines. The film includes interviews with Jack Kirby, Harvey Kurtzman, Gilbert Shelton and Richard Corben, and features Spiderman, Little Annie Fanny, Vampirella, Conan, Fabolous, Furry Freak Brothers and Den.
