In sculpture, as in the other arts, Australia has achieved a world reputation in recent years, though often at the cost of losing some of its most gifted artists to other countries. In this film Tim Burstall examines the Australian sculptors working in Australia and overseas, analyzes their attitudes and asks them to sum up their views about modern sculpture. Among the artists who appear are Norma Redpath, photographed in her Milan studio at work on a huge fountain for the National Library, Canberra, Steven Walker relaxing among the unusual forms and textures of the Australian bush from which much of his inspiration comes, and Ken Reinhart juxtaposing plastic, sheet-metal and electric-light globes to create strange tributes to the technological world. Robert Klippel, Clement Meadmore, Vincent Jomantis and many other sculptors also talk and show their work, providing a unique insight into this often misunderstood art.
