The poets, artists, philosophers and scientists who, galvanised by the Alfred Dreyfus affair, were the first to be termed 'intellectuals.' The First World War and the Bolshevik Revolution further impelled them to find the answer to a better world, leading many of them, such as the Surrealists, in 1927, to harken to the tempting call of Communism.
